Its ok to be computer illiterate, but you don't have to be CyberStupid!

The Michigan Avenue Madman

Today I received a call and email from a former CyberStupid customer that is stuck on his email newsletter list.  It seems Windows 7 SP1 (Service Pack) is yet another opportunity for the Michigan Avenue Madman to scare more dollars out of those who unknowingly trust what comes out of his mouth.  This CyberStupid is aimed calming the fires fanned by this used car salesman type self proclaimed guru.

The article teaser in this forwarded newsletter is titled "You need Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - but beware"

You can read Microsoft\'s page here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2505743: 3: Install Windows Update KB2454826

Step 3

Install Windows Update KB2454826 from Windows Update (http://www.update.microsoft.com/)  if it is not already installed. If you install the service pack from the Microsoft Download Center and do not install Windows Update KB245862, you could encounter a Stop error in Windows in rare cases.

Windows Update KB2454826 will automatically be installed when you install the service pack by using Windows Update. However, Windows Update KB2454826 is not automatically installed when you install the service pack from the Microsoft Download Center.

To check whether Windows Update KB2454826 is installed, click Start, type View installed updates in the Search programs and files box, and then press Enter. Notice whether Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2454826) is listed. If the update is not listed, you will have to install it from Windows Update (http://www.update.microsoft.com/) .

In my opinion, Lamb is fear mongering like a politician and being purposefully vague so you "can\'t" do it yourself.  He wants scared people to pay him $65 for a desktop or $80 for a laptop to install SP1 for them.  Why he "rips off" laptop owners an extra $15 for the same work to install the same update isn\'t clear.  We would do the same update for anyone for only $30, but most folks will be ok.

If he truly wanted to be helpful, he\'d give you facts instead of teasing like the Motley Fool newsletters that never tell you anything unless you pay.   The DIY types would be appreciative, and the people who are apprehensive would come to you for help any way.  Any time the Michigan Avenue Madman acts like he\'s looking after you, he\'s looking at your pocketbook (IMO) whether its his knowledge, experience, or integrity - its just another reason I consider him CyberStupid!
